WHY THE CONTROVERSY?

Three weeks into shooting, a group of Scientologists, calling themselves the Foundation for Relgious Tolerance started showing up at the film locations to claim the film was about them. Their nutty behavior of handing out fliers that said the film makers were Nazi's and KKK caused the film crew to refer to them as "The FaRTs." (check out some of these fliers). Within no time at all, the FaRTs hired some Private Investigators who tailed the film crew and soon tracked them all to their homes. The Scientologists started calling the crew at their homes and sending them letters accusing them of working on a "pornographic hate film" (certainly, the first of its kind), meanwhile sending this statement to Channel 28. Soon afterward, the Scientologists started contacting the production company's clients, vendors and insurers with "inside dirt" meant to debilitate the production. Private Investigators hired by Scientology were everywhere! They followed the Director around Europe and eventually sent in an operative to forge his name and steal a shipment of film trailers sent to his hotel. The media in Cannes, as well as the police, had a field day covering the wacky antics of this very aggressive cult. See for yourself in our MEDIA COVERAGE section.
